The Artist Retreat project involved the development of a sloping section on the tutukaka coast line. Initially the project was conceived as a single building that would function as a dedicated art studio for the client who is an accomplished local artist, however the project evolved as the client’s requirements developed over the course of the design. The Artist Retreat eventually evolved into the development of two small separate but related buildings connected by an open court area - one building being the dedicated art studio and the other being a small retreat / bach. Each building enjoys open expansive views over the coastline, and shelters the surrounding connective open space between them.
